Walnut Apartments is located in the small, coastal rural community of Fort Bragg located 3 hours north of San Francisco. The City’s history is deeply rooted in fishing and logging as it is surrounded by beaches, forests, and rivers. DFA Development partnered with Building Better Neighborhoods in this acquisition/rehabilitation project, whose mission is to carry out community and economic development activities for the community in Mendocino County. 

The development includes seven residential buildings and one community building. Consisting of one, two and three bedrooms, it will provide families in the community with a refurbished apartment unit as well as on-site laundry, a playground and an outdoor picnic area. Residents will feel at home in their comfortable one and two story garden style buildings that will provide a very desirable and spacious environment. 

Serving low-income residents, DFA secured financing from a USDA RD 515 Loan, a USDA 538 Loan, tax credit equity, tax-exempt bonds, and a HAP contract for 44 of the 55 units from Mendocino County.  DFA has hired LifeSTEPS to provide adult education, health/wellness and skill building classes for project residents to promote a holistic approach to affordable housing. Construction was completed in early 2023.
